Hottingerplatz

Within the framework of a cooperative planning process, we turned a parking area into an open, spacious public square for everyone. Benches in the shade of chestnut trees invite observing the goings-on around the new basin of water.

The Hottingen community square has been given a new look following a long cooperative planning process involving the municipal administration, the district association, and residents of the district. Our design, with was selected for further development in a public judging procedure, creates an open and spacious public square that can be used in wide variety of ways.

The central community center stands in a homogeneous wild paving that connects the areas of the square with one another on both sides. The chestnut trees provide structure and enliven the square, just as do the new, curved benches. An additional, seemingly floating basin of water provides a magically alluring accent in addition to the existing fountain.

The variously usable public square encourages small and large festivities, serves as a meeting point and forum, and invites spending midday and brief pauses. The children’s playground and the petanque field also facilitate diverse activities. As a supplement to the openness of the square, the hedge-framed area for playing provides a protected space for small children.
