A new city district is being created in Leopoldstadt: where there was previously a train station is now city; where there was once industry, there is now a park. With the “veil of trees,” we take up the orientation of the former railroad tracks and the nearby Danube River and anchor the park in the future district. Under the canopy of trees, there are various attractions such as use-intensive play and sports fields for young people, calmer uses in the “district gardens” surrounded by flowering hedges, and orange-colored play steles for children to climb on and swing. The “reed gardens” are situated between the extensive grassy clearings as a reminiscence of the landscape space of the Danube River. They are places for contemplation and also accommodate an attractive café in the heart of the park.

The socio-spatial dynamic of the future park space is steered based on a “gender plan,” by means of which use-specific questions were already incorporated in the planning during the design process. For the desired distribution of uses in the park, we took age- and gender-specific aspects in particular into account. Criteria such as utilization intensity (active, passive), visual connections, light exposure (sunny, semi-shady, shady), fields of movement to be anticipated, and the formation of spatial boundaries for the different areas of the park were thus considered in parallel. The “gender plan” was reviewed again and again during the planning process so as to ensure the implementation of gender aspects.
