Residential quarter Aubing-Mitte - Munich

The planning area is located between the S-Bahn station and the historic town center in Munich's Aubing district. It borders on residential areas of various origins and the wide meadow landscape of the “Aubinger Lohe” forest area. Through its precise spatial formation, the scenic urban design leads through the area and sets accents at the right places.

Development and green space planning, design guidelines

The planning area is located between the S-Bahn station and the historic town center in the Munich town of Aubing. It borders on residential areas of various origins and the wide meadow landscape of the Aubinger Lohe, a forest area on the western edge of München. Through its precise spatial formation, the scenic urban design leads through the area and sets accents at the right places.

A large park (Grünanlage am Freihamer Weg project) is the atmospheric focal point of the neighborhood. The construction sites and buildings are placed in such a way that changing perspectives and visual relationships arise when walking through the park. Wide, open spaces contrast with groups of buildings and trees arranged in an exciting way. The east and west sides are given an urban seong by the new development, and a border of existing trees forms a green frame.

A public path network through the new neighborhood connects adjacent residential areas with recreational areas to the west. Public play areas are located along the paths. Roads within the area are avoided. The transition between the park and private gardens is marked by bands of grasses and shrubs.

The public green areas are in contrast with more private, urban courtyards. All residential units are accessed from here. Access for cars is made directly from the streets via building-integrated underground garage exits.

Instead of the unclear and narrow situation at the S-Bahn access, an urban square is created in the north as a prelude to the area. With shopping facilities and a café, the square becomes the overriding meeting place for the neighborhood. Due to its lower location, it is soundproofed and connected to the S-Bahn station and the old village center on the other side of the railroad.

A barrier-free ramp connects the square level with the network of paths to the north and in the park. Benches along the retaining wall and a water feature in the center of the square invite visitors to linger.
