Elbe bridges test planning

Together with e2a Architekten, we developed ideas and visions for the southern entrance to Hamburg for the urban development test planning procedure. At the centre is a bridge park spanning the Elbe with diverse connections to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

The Elbbrücken city entrance will experience extensive transformation processes in the coming years that will lead to a completely new urban development situation. With a generous bridge park and precise urban interventions, we propose to bring both sides of the Elbe bridges together and to stage the Elbe bridges as an important city entrance. People and nature are given space in the increasingly dense urban body and a connecting, common centre is created.

As a generous park with attractive promenades along the water, the new open space forms a new, previously missing link in the network of open spaces between Hafencity, Entenwerder, Bille and Hammerbrook and connects them to form an extensive local recreation area. Along the banks of the Elbe, a new band of different sports facilities, a well-developed cycle path, with gastronomy and fitness facilities in the historic buildings. A riverside path leads along the Bille, past the marina of the Billhorner Canal with seating steps and a river bath and beer garden. Historical relics from different periods, such as the old-timer petrol station, old road surfaces or the blue harbour crane, are integrated into the park and subtly or deliberately refer to the changing history of this place.
