Penitentiary

The total volume was distributed over several buildings. On the one hand to adapt the plant to a human scale, on the other hand the building complex fits better into the existing building structures.

Between the buildings and the perimeter wall, a varied spatial landscape is created, including sports and walking facilities, a large vegetable garden and a ring road for emergency services. Due to its round shape, the perimeter wall blends with the landscape and gives the complex a friendlier character when viewed from inside and outside. The subtle green gradient makes the perimeter wall appear less massive, blending it with the surrounding landscape.

The design of the courtyards differs depending on the department. Thus, each courtyard gets its own character, which helps orientation and strengthens identification. Each courtyard thematizes a different type of Swiss landscape: this ranges from forest to alpine landscape to orchard. This principle of spatial contrast between the interior and exterior of the building is continued in the design of the facades: the light gray facade of precast concrete on the exterior is combined with a wooden facade in the courtyards. The wooden facades harmonize well with the landscaped courtyards. The central building, in contrast to the buildings with the various departments, has a fully greened exterior façade, underlining the sustainable ambitions of the project.

The greening of the courtyards guarantees natural shading of the facades, resulting in less heat load. The planting increases the biodiversity of the area. The seasonal aspects of the plants stimulate the senses and have a positive effect on the health of the occupants.
