School Building Rotweg

The positioning of the new school building within the existing structure facilitates the design of a spacious, south-facing schoolyard, which is now framed by façades on three sides. What arises topographically is a careful play on two levels linked by seating steps with a view of the lake. The overall appearance of the existing planting has been enhanced by means of new plantings.

The new school building is constructed as a floating structure built into the slope and fits into the settlement pattern as if as a matter of course. The positioning of the new school building within the existing structure facilitates the design of a spacious, south-facing schoolyard, which is now framed by façades on three sides and by a green embankment. What arises topographically is a careful play on two levels. The seating steps that link the two levels invite spending time with a distant view of the lake. The clear appearance is underscored by the details of the configuration: a canopy created by the foliage of plane trees is situated in the open space as a counterpart to the new school building. Here it is possible to take comfortable breaks in the shade of the trees. The long bench on the south side can be used as stands or also a free play element. The overall appearance is enhanced by the existing and new plantings. The large inventory of existing trees is supplemented with smaller flowering shrubs, whose plant height on the northern slope is defined by the height of the ground floor. From Rotweg the upper floors of the school thus appear in a blooming cloud of lilacs, elderberry, and hazelnut. One is led up the slope to the upper terrace as if through a magical forest. Small areas for retreat are created, differentiated by means of steps and small terraces.
